During the ILA2024, the International Lime Association Conference held in Oslo, Carlo Cella, CEO of QualiCal, was featured in an exclusive interview with Lime Global Brain. The discussion focused on the future of CO₂ management in the lime industry and the challenges of Carbon Capture, Storage, and Utilization (CCSU), following a visit to the advanced Heidelberg Cement CCSU plant in Brevik, Norway.

In the interview, Carlo Cella highlighted the significant limitations of current CCSU technologies, emphasizing that high costs and the lack of adequate infrastructure for CO₂ transportation and storage remain major obstacles to large-scale adoption.

“Without a widespread, accessible infrastructure to transport CO₂, the time and costs required to make these solutions operational are prohibitive,” Carlo Cella explained. “These challenges have led QualiCal to explore alternative approaches, which culminated in the NANO project.”

Carlo Cella described NANO as a breakthrough towards decentralizing lime production, challenging traditional paradigms.

NANO proposes a network of distributed micro-plants that manage CO₂ locally, avoiding the need for costly transportation infrastructure.

“Instead of moving the CO₂, we move the lime along well-established logistical channels, drastically reducing implementation times and costs,” — Carlo Cella elaborated — “The core of the NANO project lies in a CO₂-centric production model, where CO₂ is no longer considered waste but a resource to be captured and utilized on-site.”

This interview reflects QualiCal’s commitment to rethinking the future of industrial lime production, with an innovative and pragmatic approach that seeks to make production processes not only more efficient but also inherently sustainable and flexible.
