For over two decades, QualiCal International Srl, headquartered in Bergamo, Italy, has been a driving force behind the evolution of India’s lime and steel sectors — two industries inseparably linked by chemistry, performance, and carbon challenges.

Wherever steel grows, lime is the silent enabler: purifying iron, desulphurizing steel, stabilizing slag, and determining the quality and energy efficiency of the overall process. Recognizing this synergy early on, QualiCal built its Indian journey on one clear vision — to be not just a kiln supplier, but a technology partner for the next generation of steel producers.

From the First Kiln to a Network of Partnerships

QualiCal’s presence in India dates back to 2006–2007, when the company supplied its first Synthesis® PFR twin-shaft kilns to Bhushan Power & Steel Ltd ( Now JSW Steel Ltd ) That initial project marked the beginning of a long-term partnership with India’s rapidly growing steel sector — one built on trust, technical excellence, and local capability.

Since then, QualiCal has designed and supplied multiple installations for both private and government-owned steel plants, each project reflecting an ongoing dialogue between Italian innovation and Indian industrial ambition.

IISCO: A Milestone for the Steel–Lime Alliance

The IISCO Steel Plant project (2025) represents one of the largest lime kiln installations ever undertaken in India — and a turning point in the evolution of the steel–lime alliance.

Located in Burnpur and owned by SAIL (Steel Authority of India Ltd), the project includes four 600 tpd Synthesis® kilns, each engineered for high productivity and low environmental impact. The plant integrates advanced combustion control, low-NOx burners, and fuel management systems to minimize CO₂ intensity.

“IISCO represents more than a contract,” says Carlo Cella CEO of QualiCal International. — “It’s a national reference showing how sustainable lime production directly strengthens steelmaking efficiency. For every ton of high-quality steel, there is a hidden ton of high-quality lime behind it.”

Each kiln is digitally connected through MOSAICO, QualiCal’s AI-powered workspace platform, enabling real-time process monitoring, predictive maintenance, and performance benchmarking across shifts and sites. This project not only supports India’s domestic steel expansion but also sets a benchmark for low-carbon lime technology in integrated steel plants.

Beyond Technology: Building a Local Ecosystem

From the very beginning, QualiCal’s strategy in India has been guided by knowledge transfer and localization. Rather than acting as a foreign supplier, the company invested in building QualiCal India, a local engineering and service team capable of supervising erection, commissioning, and performance optimization.

This was later expanded through QualiPOOL India, a cooperative network of Indian manufacturers and service providers that produce key kiln components domestically — perfectly aligned with the #MakeInIndia initiative.

QualiCal’s NEXT GENERATION LIME Vision 2050 provides the roadmap: a comprehensive strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in lime production while improving efficiency, scalability, and digital intelligence.

This vision is built on four main pillars:

• Efficiency & Scale — Designing and operating kilns up to 800 tpd with optimized thermal profiles and reduced energy intensity.
• Sustainability — Adopting biomass, hydrogen, and alternative fuels to minimize carbon emissions and preparing for CO₂ capture and reuse.
• Digitalization — Expanding the deployment of MOSAICO, the proprietary AI platform that supports operators through smart alarms, digital twins, and predictive analytics.
• Localization — Strengthening the QualiPOOL India manufacturing and service ecosystem to ensure local growth aligned with the Make in India initiative.

At its core, this vision recognizes that the decarbonization of steel begins with the decarbonization of lime. By rethinking the kiln not as a static furnace but as an energy–CO₂ reactor, QualiCal is redefining how lime contributes to circular and data-driven steelmaking.
