#neverstopINNOVATING

As part of the NEXT GENERATION LIME vision and in direct response to the EULA 2025 Roadmap, QualiCal continues to advance its technologies to reduce CO₂ emissions — not only through efficiency, but through true transformation.

One of the clearest pathways is the fuel switch from fossil sources to biomass, enabling immediate and scalable reductions in combustion-related emissions.

Why it matters

As EULA points out, the lime industry’s carbon profile is unique: over 60% of CO₂ emissions come from the chemical reaction of limestone calcination, and roughly one-third from fuel combustion. That one-third is where we can act — and act fast.

By replacing coal or petcoke with CO₂-neutral biomass fuels, we can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of lime production.

For one-third of all emissions that originate from energy production, the lime industry can apply ‘usual’ abatement measures like fuel switch and energy efficiency. One option to reduce emissions from energy production is the switch to fuels with reduced carbon intensity, such as natural gas or biomass. Switching to gas may have a positive impact on the quality of the produced lime, but is in many cases more expensive than solid fossil fuels-based production. Switching to biomass requires additional investments, especially when switching from natural gas.

The Synthesis® kiln firign system upgraded for biomass

Thanks to a long-term collaboration within the QualiPOOL partner network, QualiCal and Carbotechnik have co-developed an advanced biomass dosing and firing system for the Synthesis® Parallel Flow Regenerative (PFR) kiln.

The Carbotecnik unit features an agitator that ensures homogeneous distribution of the material inside the tank, effectively preventing issues such as compaction and bridging.

  • The powdered biomass is then dosed using a specially engineered perforated disc, allowing for smooth and accurate material feeding.
  • A speed-controlled motor regulates the flow rate, ensuring continuous and highly precise dosing.

Compared to traditional systems, Carbotechnik’s technology offers pulsation-free, uninterrupted material delivery — a perfect match for the requirements of the calcination process.

Key upgrades to the Carbotechnik system

To ensure constant feed and safety, the dosing unit integrates:

  • Improved agitator design, managing rough, fibrous fuels
  • New dosing disks, delivering uniform, pulsation-free material flow
  • Independent delivery rates across multiple lines
  • Pressure shock resistance, minimizing explosion risks
This allows the Synthesis® kiln to maintain optimal flame control, reduce excess air, and preserve lime reactivity — even with variable alternative fuels.

Commercial and strategic relevance

This upgraded firing solution is not just a technical success — it reflects the renewal reinforcing a long-term partnership between QualiCal and Carbotechnik based on real performance and shared commitment to innovation.

It also exemplifies the results of QualiCal’s #neverstopINNOVATING R&D strategy — a vision-driven approach fully embraced by the NEXT GENERATION LIME program.

By making biomass a viable and scalable option, this technology actively contributes to both the United Nations SDGs and the EULA 2050 decarbonization pathway, providing practical, measurable steps toward sustainable lime production.
